Gas Spring Installation and Mounting Guide

Mount a standard compression gas spring with the rod downward when the application allows. Keep both brackets aligned and let the end fittings pivot freely through the full movement. Side or twisting loads can increase seal friction, bend the rod and cause early failure. Follow the product label and application-specific instructions.

Prefer rod down
Gemini gas springs can be mounted in different directions, but rod down is recommended for the best lubrication, motion and end damping. Check the product label first.
Keep the pivots in line
The spring should pivot freely at both brackets. Misalignment can put side or twisting force into the rod, seals and end fittings.
Secure the moving load
Support the door, lid, cover or flap before fitting or removing a spring. Never rely on an unsecured panel or the other spring to hold it up.

Step-by-step method

Work through each step in order and record the details as you go.
  1. Secure the door, lid or panel

    Use a stable mechanical support before removing hardware or bringing the pressurized spring into the mounting area.

  2. Read the product label and drawing

    Confirm the specified mounting direction, end fittings, bracket locations and pivot-centre measurements for the application.

  3. Check bracket alignment

    Place both mounting pivots in the same working plane. The rod and cylinder must not be pulled sideways or twisted as the panel moves.

  4. Mount the moving-side bracket

    Fasten the bracket to the door, lid, cover or flap at the specified location, then connect the eyelet or ball socket with its supplied retainer.

  5. Connect the fixed-side bracket

    Mount the wall or frame bracket at the specified position and secure the second fitting without forcing the spring out of line.

  6. Check the full movement

    With the load still safely supported, move the application slowly through its travel. Stop if a fitting binds, a bracket flexes or the spring approaches over-compression or over-extension.

Should a gas spring be installed rod up or rod down?

For a standard compression gas spring, Gemini recommends rod downward when the layout allows it.

The oil inside the cylinder helps lubricate the seal and provides damping near the end of the stroke. A rod-down position keeps that oil where it can support both functions. The result is smoother motion and more dependable end damping.

This is a recommendation, not a substitute for the product label. Gemini gas springs can be mounted in different directions, and some applications need a different orientation. Follow the label and the instructions supplied for the selected spring. Ask Gemini to review the layout if the spring must run rod up or close to horizontal.

How to avoid side load and twisting

A gas spring should carry force along its centreline and pivot freely at both ends.

Side load starts when the brackets, end fittings or moving structure force the spring out of line. Even a small offset can make the rod press against the seal as the panel moves. The added friction can damage the seal, bend the rod or shorten the spring's service life.

Check alignment in the closed position, the open position and between them. A bracket that looks square at one end of the travel may twist the spring at another point. Paired springs normally need matching mounting points so they share the movement evenly, unless the application has been specifically engineered and reviewed for an asymmetric layout.

Install eyelets and ball sockets correctly

Use the retainer supplied for the fitting and leave enough freedom for the spring to pivot.

For an eyelet connection, remove the bracket pin, bolt or retaining clip, place the eyelet in the bracket, then reinstall the hardware. Tighten a nut only as specified. Clamping an eyelet so tightly that it cannot pivot can transfer twisting force into the spring.

For a ball socket, remove the folding safety pin when required, fit the socket over the matching ball stud and reinstall the pin so the socket cannot detach. Grease belongs inside the ball socket when the fitting instructions call for it. Do not grease or oil the piston rod.

  • Use the specified pin, ball and thread sizes rather than forcing a near match.
  • Screw threaded end fittings fully home unless the product drawing says otherwise.
  • Keep retaining clips and safety pins seated after installation.
  • Replace damaged or distorted brackets instead of pulling them into line with the spring.

Final installation and safety check

Inspect the complete mechanism before the support is removed and the application is returned to service.

Confirm that the spring does not collide with the structure, bottom out or overextend anywhere in the travel. The brackets and fasteners must suit the loads produced by the chosen geometry. If the application uses two springs, check both sides through the same movement.

Keep the piston rod clean and protect it from dirt, scratches, paint and impact. Wipe it with a dry, clean cloth, moving away from the cylinder. Never drill, cut, heat or open a gas spring during installation, use or servicing; the internal pressure can be extremely high.
