Application guide
Marine Gas Springs for Hatches and Deck Equipment
Selected around your load, geometry, mounting space and operating environment.
What the mechanism needs to do
- Open
- Assist with lifting a hatch, locker lid or equipment-compartment cover.
- Support
- Hold the moving panel at the required access angle without obstructing the opening.
- Protect
- Select materials and connections with the application's moisture and corrosion exposure in view.
Engineer the complete movement
A marine gas spring is selected around the hatch, not from a generic boat-part label. Hatch weight, hinge position, centre of gravity and the desired open angle determine the working geometry. The design also has to leave clear space for people, stored equipment, seals and surrounding structure.
Exposure can vary sharply between an interior cabinet, a protected engine compartment and an exterior deck locker. Salt water, washdown, condensation and dissimilar mounting materials should be described so the spring body, rod and end fittings can be reviewed as a complete installation. A 316 stainless configuration may be appropriate, but material selection still depends on the specific environment and duty.
When replacing a boat-hatch strut, record more than the extended length. Photographs of both mounting points, the compressed length, stroke, shaft and tube diameters, end-fitting type and any readable markings help prevent a dimensional match that behaves differently once installed.

What to send us
- Hatch geometry
- Weight, dimensions, hinge position, opening angle and number of springs.
- Available space
- Extended and closed mounting distances throughout the hatch travel.
- Exposure
- Fresh water, salt water, condensation, washdown and sheltered or exterior use.
- Connections
- Mounting material, bracket position, end fittings and required articulation.
Replacing an existing part? Include clear photographs of the spring label and both mounting points. You can also use the gas spring configurator to organize the basic dimensions.
